Acer Aspire One D257 - Freezing issue resolved

Our Acer Aspire One D257 netbook had an odd issue where it would simply freeze when any sort of load was put on the wireless network (for instance, when downloading files). There is a dearth of information about the issue online; some people blamed the wireless drivers, some thought it was overheating.

One bright spark managed to track down the problem - a bad BIOS. Flashing it to a later version (in my case from v1.08 to v1.15) fixed the problem immediately, so I'm posting this resolution here in case anyone else has a similar problem.

The BIOS update file is on Acer's site:

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_1.15_A_A.zip?acerid=634583037092226871&Step1=Netbook&Step2=Aspire%20One&Step3=AOD257&OS=722&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_16

Just in case it gets removed, there's a copy available here.

Hopefully this will be of some use to someone!

Sir, you got it!!! Problem solved. I downloaded the zip file in a thumb drive and loaded it on my D257 (which had the same problem). Downloaded several long files via wireless and never froze. For new readers just be sure that your netbook is pluged or the update will not run. Thanks a lot!!!

I am using windows 7 ultimate. I had the same problem with my D257. After I downloaded the zip file and run it, the aero effect of my windows is disabled. Also the audio service and other devices. What should I do? Please help! Thanks!!!

Odd.... where is everyone getting the tag D-257? I have an Acer Aspire One manufactured in April 2012 running Windows 7 and have the same problem. Wish now I had gone for the Chrome book from Samsung.

upon further examination, my Aspire One is a new 722 with a v1.08 bios and has this same freezing issue. I am wrestling with how an outdated bios is impacted by loaded wifi.

hi ..in my case it is somewhat different..my acer was running great......but after flashing bios to v1.15 ..the freezing issue started....

Why did you update the BIOS if the machine was fine?

hi..Rob..i updated it because my acer battery was not getting detected under UBUNTU OS.Then i found in internet that updating the Bios to V1.15 solves the issue.
hence i had updated it and battery issue is resolved. But now, while i m using windows ,my laptop freezes while performing any disk operations.........

I have one D257 but, the problem is black screen, so I can't flash the bios with those files... there's not *.FD files just executables, any ideas?

Sounds like a slightly different issue. There's been some success reported here - it might help:

What do i do once I downloaded the files? I am in a WinRAR window and I don't know what that is or how to use it.

You'll need to download WinRar which is a free app - here:

or if running on 64-bit Windows:
